But it all just feels a bit off the mark. The art department has lavishly recreated environments and costumes straight out of the classic vision of the future from the anime series. Yoko Kanno returns to provide the new show's score, bringing the same sonic swagger that made the anime's soundtrack so memorable. The cast is all game and pulling out the stops to bring the anime characters to life. The most heartbreaking thing about the live-action Cowboy Bebop is that all the ingredients for an impressive adaptation are there. Protagonist Spike Spiegel works with Jet Black to track down bounties on deadly criminals across the cosmos, putting them on a collision course with multiple dangerous characters, including fellow bounty hunter Faye Valentine. Much of the solar system has been settled on by humanity after Earth was devastated by a cataclysmic event. Like the original series, Cowboy Bebop follows the spacefaring crew of the Bebop in a neon future. Created by Hajime Yatate, a pseudonym for Sunrise Entertainment's animation staff, the original Cowboy Bebop is revered as one of the greatest anime properties of all time. While Netflix's Cowboy Bebop certainly brings high production value, ambition, and respect for the source material, it ultimately results in a show that can't balance finding its identity with evoking the beloved anime.

However, he wouldn’t hesitate to knock a dude out who threatened him, his friends or his car. He was a young man who loved racing and was achingly galant and kind-hearted, who cared deeply about his friends and family. Spritle as they’re written at times, that’s generally not a good sign.Īs the hero, Speed was a sort of prototype for many Anime and toon heroes to follow. You can scarcely distinguish the intelligence level of Pops versus It’s fraught with tiresome recapping dialogue, diversionary characters like Spritle and Chim-Chim, and plots that occasionally border on the asinine. Although the show is peppered with colorful villains and lots of racing action, its strictly a product of its time period. I’m well aware of the fanbase this show has going for it, but Speed Racer is an incredibly childish toon that hasn’t held up well over the last 40 years. “Speed, don’t you think this is a little non-eco-friendly?” Now when I try to recapture that feeling I had back in the day, it’s gone.

I hadn’t seen a full episode in almost the entirety of that span. I remember driving my mother crazy, running around singing the theme song till I collapsed in exhaustion. One has music that I’ve kept in my head for thirty years and is still possibly my all-time favorite cartoon. One still fills me with that occasional feeling of wonder and excitement I had as a kid, and always nostalgia. There were two Anime cartoons I watched in my childhood: Speed Racer and Battle of the Planets. “Okay, so then anyway, that was nothing compared to what was going on Tyra! They had the cast of Mamma Mia on and – “ “Well, they had Debbie Matenopoulos back on and she got into it with Elizabeth Hasselbeck…well, who doesn’t get into it with Elizabeth, right? Anyway…are you listening Speed ?” “So then we talked about what happened on The View. “…so then I told my friend Sharon and she was like ‘whatever’ and I was like, ‘whatever’ and so then we both giggled and we were like, ‘whatever.’ With the help of his father, Pops Racer, friends Trixie, Spritle, Chim-Chim (who’s a monkey by the way), and the mysterious Racer X, Speed races for his life. There’s danger at every turn and Speed needs to rely on his nerve, skill, and the Mach 5’s gadgets in order to survive.
